Opal is one of the October birthstones.

Opals are in a class by themselves. As a species, opal is so unique it has its own descriptive vocabulary. Opals are also the most delicate gemstones commonly worn and require special care. 

Because they are one of the softer gemstones and great care should be taken to keep your opal beautiful.  Always remove any opal gems or jewelry before exercising, playing sports or engaging in vigorous household chores.

Avoid exposing your opal to chemicals or extremes in tempurature.  For example, going from a warm house to sub freezing temps can cause the stone to crack.  

The only safe way to clean opal is with warm, soapy water. Do not use Ultrasonic cleaners.
