Amethyst is the birthstone for February and the gem for the 6th and 17th wedding anniversaries.

Ancient Greeks would drink their wine from goblets decorated with amethyst gemstones in order to not get too drunk. One of its nicknames is the 'sobriety stone'. It was believed to prevent intoxication—amethystos means “not drunk” in ancient Greek.
